Last year, we helped fund an amazing project organised by Sheffcare’s Kathryn Rawlings in conjunction with an electroacoustic composer, Julia Schauerman.
They worked with a group of care home residents and held multi-sensory sessions, using images, sounds and poetry to stimulate conversations. They recorded shared thoughts, opinions and memories.
“It was wonderful to listen to the voices of these older women of Sheffield; the sharing and comparing of their experiences. They talk with wonder, stoicism and good humour, it is both engaging and moving”, Julia says.
Early in the project, Julia blended some of their stories to compose a short acousmatic story in order to give the group a better idea of what they were working towards and chose the sounds they liked
This culminated in the creation of a composition which gives the residents a voice and also helps to paint a picture of social history which may be used artistically and educationally in the future.
The group’s final task was to name their project and spontaneously it was named “Memories of the All Together Girls” reflecting that an additional outcome was the firmer friendship bonds made during these wonderful sessions.
We are so please that we could support this project.
